SITE CONTEXT:

A country property on clay loam with a winter creek.  Beautiful honey-coloured site granite excavated from recent dam works is available for walling in the garden. An inherited cottage garden surrounds the house, which will be renovated and extended

DESIGN INTENT:

The intent behind the design was to re-imagine the cultivated parts of the landscape to be more sympathetic with the broader site. This meant moving from a cottage feel to a more open, textured garden, with less deciduousness and more layers of planting that could attract and hold onto the stunning light that permeates through the property.

An olive grove, to be transplanted en masse from a neighbour, is the entrance point from the broader landscape, leading to a meadow of native field grasses interspersed with seasonal pops of perennial colour. The front entrance to the house has been entirely re-worked, with stone retaining walls taking up the steep grade and batten screening providing a courtyard area for guests.

Granite stepping stones nestled deep within the turf provides a path network throughout the areas around the house, and leads down through a steep wooded pathway to the creek below, where mass granite stepping stones, stencilled with personal messages from the clients, provide safe passage over the water.
