SITE CONTEXT:
Located only 800 metres from the famous pink lake in Esperance, the site has borrowed views across to the golf course. The sandy soil has a very high alkalinity of between 8 & 9 on the pH scale, and Armillaria is present on the site.
DESIGN INTENT:
The design needed to take into account the busy and active lives of the clients and their small children, so a number of zones were created, including a kitchen garden, a large turf area, a double car parking space that could double as a hardstand sports area for the kids, and moments within the garden that would create a sense of exploration and adventure.
Silvered timber batten screens have been utilised across the site to create zones: a modern version of ‘garden rooms’. The planting scheme utilises deciduous grasses and large drifts of Gaura lindheimeri ‘Alba’, which when cut annually can be utilised in the composting system for the kitchen garden.
The stunning new house designed by Reside Studio and built locally by Dixon Construction has an interesting internal viewing gallery that runs east/west across the home. This effectively creates two small internal courtyards on each side of the house, and together with the intimate courtyards on the south side of the house, allows versatility in the planting scheme for low-light and shade loving plants.
