SITE CONTEXT:

Tucked behind the dunes of Perkins Beach, the balance of the agricultural site is cattle pasture on peaty ground, with a mixture of clover, rye grass and kikuyu.

DESIGN INTENT:

The design makes use of native ornamental grasses, including kangaroo and wallaby grass, to blur the distinction between the cultivated and borrowed landscapes.

Mass concrete form via oversized steppers, formed walls and concrete liner vegetable beds, is scaled to the exceptional new home.

The juxtaposition between the softness and movement of the grasses and the hard angles of the built form creates a pleasing distinction. The material palette of crushed limestone, silvered timber and split granite ties the garden both to the architecture and to the unique coastal site.
