SITE CONTEXT:

A working cattle farm, with clay-loam soils and exceptional borrowed views from the exposed hilltop location of the beautiful boutique accommodation back to the surrounding rolling paddocks and across the adjoining vineyard.

DESIGN INTENT:

Catching the fading afternoon light to the west, the soft inflorescences of the paddock grasses have been replicated in the garden with native Pennisetum, Poa and Lomandra species, softening the junction between the borrowed and cultivated. Further connecting the existing farm to the new landscape, site-sourced granite boulders, recycled concrete water troughs and jarrah sleepers were utilised in the design. The circular troughs inspired the curved concrete benches which frame the firepit areas; this agricultural materiality is softened by crushed quartz fines to the paths, allowing a relaxed beachy feel and an opportunity to wander barefooted around the gardens
