SITE CONTEXT:

Adjacent to the Potter's Well function centre and situated within the broader Gardens at Bullimah, the site is situated in a open position and exposed to summer easterlies. The very acidic sand with a pH of 4 has been improved somewhat with local topsoil, and a shallow depression in the centre of the garden is subject to occasional winter ponding which needs to be managed through wetter winters.

DESIGN INTENT:

The aspiration for the Potter's Well garden was for a ‘dry’ herbaceous perennial garden planted out heavily in an intermingled style with species selected carefully from summer-drought climactic regions from around the world. Heavily flowering in spring and summer, the large granite boulders placed throughout the site give structure to the otherwise soft planting and offer habitat for local fauna. The planting mix relies upon the form of the selected plants to carry the garden, with upright perennials and grasses favoured over spilling forms or plants prone to pitching. As a designed plant community, its success relies upon understanding the competitive strategies of each species to maintain the diversity and stability of the planting.
